Another tough grid schedule awaits the Bourbon County Colonels

The 2022 prep football season is a little over two weeks away from officially starting, and when this season gets underway, Coach David Jones and his Colonels could have enough firepower to finally get over the hump in a very strong district that house the likes of perennial powers Boyle County and Lexington Catholic and not so shabby Anderson County.
Jones, the former Belfry and UK star, who is now in his fourth season with the Colonels, saw his squad bow out in the first round of the 4A state playoffs a year ago when they lost to host Lexington Catholic in a nail biter. They finished 2021 with a 5-6 record.
Returning from that team is a boat load of talent and despite their small numbers, this team could be gearing up for as special run… if everyone stays healthy, noting that BC recently lost two key starters after a serious car wreck. According to the coaches, both young men are doing fine as of this writing.
Early diagnosis of Bourbon’s 2022 team looks very promising with so many key ingredients returning that includes but not limited to 2021 all-district performers, Clay Estes (ranked as the 6th best quarterback passer in 4A after throwing for 1,676 yards and 6 touchdowns), Josh Moody (rushed a team-best 926 yards, while scoring 11 touchdowns), Jaden Commodore (had a team-best 23 receptions for 478 yards and 3 touchdowns), Cam Ron Goodwin (led the team with 120 total tackles, which was second best in Class 4A and 14th best in the entire state, while forcing a state-best 9 fumbles), Marcus Floyd (had 7 catches for 217 yards and 2 touchdowns and totaled 28 tackles), DaMarius “Dae” McKee-Ross (scored 4 touchdowns and totaled 19 tackles while playing a limited number of games following an injury) and Cameron Santiago (caught 21 passes for 294 yards and 3 touchdowns).
It’s a good thing the Colonels return what they do because looking at their schedule, they’re going to need all hands on deck and some.
Bourbon will play defending state champions Belfry (3A) and Boyle County (4A), along with Great Crossing, Knox Central, Letcher County Central, and long-time rival Harrison County. Throw in Lexington Catholic, West Jessamine, Anderson County and Woodward (Cincinnati), OH, one can see why this team wants the “smoke” because every win would be a win Jones’ team certainly earned.
Bourbon’s first regular season game will be in the WestJessamine.com Bowl where they will play the host West Jessamine Colts at 6:00pm on August 19.
