Reeds dismissed from Mason County basketball team

MAYSVILLE — Blake Reed and Cayden Reed are longer part of the Mason County boys basketball team. They were informed of the decision by the Mason County coaching staff on Sunday afternoon Blake and Cayden Reed transferred to Mason County over the summer after four seasons at Bracken County.

Mason County and the Reeds were off to a great start. Blake Reed broke the 10th Region scoring record of 3,542 points on December 8th vs. Green County where he also hit a game-winning three.

Blake played nine minutes against Harlan in South Laurel’s pre-Christmas that Mason County came back and won after being down by 23 points. On January 2nd, he did not play a majority of the second half in their 63-60 win over Rowan County.

The Mason County coaches made the decision that Blake would not play in the next three games against Powell County (W), Fleming County (L), or Campbell County (W). He returned against Pendleton County on January 16th, scoring 20 points in 12 minutes in their 88-49 win.

Their next game against East Jessamine on January 23rd, Blake did not play and Cayden Reed played just four minutes. After the game, the Reed brothers were asked to not attend any practices or their next two games against Boone County (L) and Holy Cross (W).

Following those games, the coaches determined that Blake and Cayden Reed would not come back to the team on Sunday.

Blake Reed will finish his high school career with 3,746 points. Blake led the team in scoring, averaging 18.9 points with 3.6 rebounds in 14 games played. In 18 games, Cayden Reed was tied as their second-leading scorer with 13.6 points per game and second in rebounds with 5.4 per game. He also led the team in assists and steals. Cayden is a junior and could possibly play at another school for his senior year.

Mason County has a record of 13-7 and dropped from second in the region to fifth this week.
