Jason Mays coaching Montgomery County against Lawrence County in the first round of the 2025 Sweet 16.

Jason Mays has resigned as the head coach at Montgomery County after text messages surfaced alleging that Mays tried to recruit an unenrolled player.

Mays was previously ousted at Ashland for similar allegations after he was recorded on a phone call with the parent of a rival school.

This weekend, it was announced that the best 8th Region player from North Oldham made the unexpected decision to transfer to Montgomery County. That player still intends to play at Montgomery County, pending eligibility.

Neil Terry will serve as the interim head coach. Terry was a current assistant coach and former head coach at Owsley County.

Montgomery County made it to the semifinals of the Sweet 16 last season in Mays’ second year as head coach. It was the Indians’ third regional championship in school history and first since 2013.

Mays was set to do an interview with The Corner2Corner Podcast Monday night.

Montgomery County Schools released this statement:

Sunday night, November 30, 2025, we were made aware of allegations regarding potential KHSAA bylaw violations within our Boys Varsity Basketball program alleged to have occurred in 2024. The alleged bylaw violations do not involve any current or former Montgomery County student athletes.

After a discussion with head coach Jason Mays this afternoon, he has resigned as basketball coach. Assistant coach Neil Terry will serve as acting head coach at this time.
