Baseball:
Harrison County 12, Augusta 2 (5 innings)
It was all Thorobreds after they established an 8-0 lead through three innings. Freshman Russ Persinger went 2 for 3 with a trio of RBIs, while juniors Sean Vaughn and Cooper Slade added two each. Senior Boston Reynolds, junior Sawyer Cracraft and junior Simon Jenkins combined for a no-hitter, also teaming up for five total Ks.
George Rogers Clark 6, Scott 5
The Eagles raced out to a 4-0 lead after two innings. GRC’s starting pitcher got thrown out in the top of the second. When it was 5-1 after the top of the fourth, it looked like the game was falling Scott’s way.
Then, the Cardinals woke up.
Both teams threw their aces for this opening-round game. After a scoreless opening frame, Eagles freshman Ty Cook hit a double to right-center to break the 0-0 deadlock in the second. Senior Brady Smith’s single turned into three runs thanks to an error. Following the play, however, Cardinals pitcher and sophomore Myles Frick was thrown out of the game.
A hit-by-pitch and three walks got GRC on the board in the third to make it 4-1. Smith tacked on his fourth RBI of the game in the top of the fourth as the Eagles extended their lead to 5-1. Cook navigated 3.5 innings without allowing a hit, but that ended in the fourth when Cardinals sophomore Gunnar Martin hit a single to right field. A throwing error on the play made it a 5-2 game, and when sophomore Tielor Howie loaded the bases in the fifth with a single, Cook’s day was done. Scott’s collapse, though, was just beginning.
A sacrifice fly combined with a bases-loaded walk, a subsequent balk and a wild pitch saw Scott’s lead evaporate. Neither team would score in the final frames as the Cardinals’ comeback efforts prevailed.
Campbell County 16, Nicholas County 1 (4 innings)
It might’ve been a lopsided final score, but the Bluejackets were up 1-0 after the first and held a 1-1 tie through two. That’s when the Camels scored nine runs off three walks, three hits-by-pitch and six consecutive singles in the bottom of the third, then adding six more in the fourth to complete the run rule. Senior Carson Clark went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and 4 RBIs. Fellow senior Zach Franzen contributed a 3-for-3 performance with an RBI, while juniors Tyler Schumacher and Lane Frost had 3 and 2 RBIs, respectively. Bluejackets sophomore Jayden Robinson’s RBI single in the first was the only hit for Nicholas County.
Montgomery County 9, Mason County 2
The bats were hot for the Indians, who recorded 16 hits as they punched their ticket to the semifinals. Montgomery County took a 7-1 lead through four innings and never looked back. Sophomore Brayden Dore went 5 for 5 with a game-high 3 RBIs. Juniors Rex Turner and Robby Howard went 2 for 4 and 3 for 4, respectively, while adding 2 RBIs apiece. Senior Jordan Howard got it done on the mound as well. He pitched a complete game, giving up four hits and one earned run. For the Royals, senior Cray Fite went 1 for 3 with a walk and an RBI.
On deck:
Harrison County vs. GRC (Wednesday at 5:30pm). It’ll be their first time facing off this season. The last matchup was in 2023 when the Thorobreds won, 7-3.
Campbell County vs. Montgomery County (Wednesday at 8pm). Also a first-time matchup this year, with the 2023 10th Region semifinals being the last time the Camels and Indians played each other as well. That one finished 5-4 in favor of Campbell County, who ultimately fell to Harrison County 11-1 (6 innings) in the title game.

Softball:
Mason County 5, Scott 1
The Lady Royals scored three runs in their opening frame and never looked back, despite leaving nine runners on base throughout the contest. Junior Olivia Hughes led the way with three hits and two RBIs. Senior Reese Hardeman and sophomore Reagan Workman contributed an RBI apiece, while sophomore Delana Rigg tossed a complete game with four strikeouts, four hits and one earned run. Scott’s lone run came from senior Emerson Morman.
Harrison County 10, GRC 0 (5 innings)
The Fillies’ bats were hot, and a combined no-hitter from juniors Isabella Persinger and Shyanne Ross sealed the deal. Eighth grader Aleigha Newby’s 4-for-4 performance included three doubles and a team-high four RBIs. Junior Lexie Highlander contributed three hits and two RBIs as well, while senior Baylee Hudgins, senior Allison Dye and Persinger had one RBI apiece. In the circle, Persinger tossed 7 strikeouts in 72 pitches, while Ross notched 3 Ks with just 14 pitches.
Montgomery County 1, Pendleton County 0
Sometimes, one is all you need. A solo home run from Lady Indians senior Madison Cox in the bottom of the first was the difference against the Wildcats. MoCo senior Ryleigh Martin threw a complete game and allowed four hits while notching 8 strikeouts. Pendleton County sophomore Hannah Spaulding recorded 8 Ks as well along with six hits and one walk.
Campbell County 3, Bracken County 0
Another game that saw all the scoring action take place in the opening frame. A two-out, bases-loaded double from junior Mallory Fleckenstein brought in three runs for the Lady Camels, who only allowed three hits thanks to junior Hope Hamilton’s day in the circle. She added 6 strikeouts while only letting up one walk.
On deck:
Mason County vs. Harrison County (Wednesday at 5pm). The two have met once this season, with the Fillies winning 12-0 back on March 27.
Montgomery County vs. Campbell County (Wednesday at 7pm). It’ll be the first time these two schools have met since 2013, per KHSAA. Lady Indians won that one 9-2 en route to a 10th Region championship.
