ALEXANDRIA, Ky. — The 10th Region Baseball Tournament was held at the new Bishop Brossart Mustang Athletic Complex at Verst Family Field. While none of the games were wide margins, they were not necessarily close games either. The teams advancing had strong pitching performances to put them in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Campbell County 5, Bracken County 0

Trip Mercurio threw a complete-game shutout Monday as Campbell County defeated Bracken County in the opening game of the 10th Region Baseball Tournament at the Bishop Brossart Mustang Athletic Complex. Mercurio allowed two hits over seven innings with seven strikeouts and no walks.

The Camels threatened early, as three walks loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom half of the 1st inning. However, Polar Bear pitcher Noah Bachman struck out the next batter looking to end the frame. Bachman then struck out the side in the 2nd inning.

Campbell County took the lead in the third inning after Gino Ramundo and Tyler Schumacher drew walks. Morehead State commit and catcher Camden Tiemeier doubled to center field to score both runners and give the Camels a 2-0 lead.

The Camels added a run in the fourth when Lucas Anthrop walked, moved to second on Finley Schultz’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Jackson Bittner’s two-out single to left. Campbell County stretched the lead to 5-0 in the fifth after Schumacher singled, Tiemeier reached on an error, and Gavin Richardson followed with a two-run single to right.

For Bracken County, Caleb Sutton and Noah Bachman had the team’s two hits. Bachman took the loss for Bracken County, allowing five runs, three earned, on four hits over five innings. He struck out eight and walked six. Bachman was named to the All-Tournament Team. Justis Johnson pitched a scoreless sixth inning in relief.

Bracken County’s season ends at 12-16. Campbell County improves to 23-13.

George Rogers Clark 7, Harrison County 0

George Rogers Clark scored two runs in the first inning and Haddon Cecil pitched a complete-game shutout. Cecil allowed two hits over seven innings, struck out 11 and walked two.

The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the first after Gunner Martin singled and Walker Overton singled behind him. Martin scored on Cole Fithen’s sacrifice fly to right, and Overton scored on Cecil’s sacrifice bunt. GRC added a run in the third when Martin singled and scored on Overton’s double to center field.

Clark County made it 4-0 in the fourth after Cecil walked, stole third and scored on Caleb Pierce’s sacrifice bunt. The Cardinals added three runs in the fifth. Martin reached on an error and Jacob Todd singled before Fithen reached on another error. Cecil followed with a single to left that scored Martin and Todd, and Fithen later scored on Jaxson Frick’s sacrifice fly.

Martin led the Cardinals from the leadoff spot, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Overton went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Cecil went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, a walk and a run scored.

Cooper Slade took the loss for Harrison County, allowing seven runs, three earned, on seven hits over six innings. He struck out three and walked two. Blake Green and B.J. Napier had Harrison County’s two hits, with Napier doubling in the seventh inning. B.J. Napier was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Harrison County’s season ends at 31-5. George Rogers Clark improves to 18-14-1 and will play Campbell County in the semifinals on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.

Montgomery County 7, Nicholas County 1

Montgomery County scored two runs in the third inning and added four in the sixth Monday to defeat Nicholas County. The Indians finished with eight hits and used three pitchers to hold Nicholas County to one run on four hits.

Montgomery County took a 2-0 lead in the third after Robby Howard was hit by a pitch, Marcus Wells singled and Jayse Mays reached on an infield single to load the bases. Carter Poe followed with a fielder’s choice that scored Braylon Lambert, running for Howard, and Rex Turner added a sacrifice fly to bring in Wells. The Indians added another run in the fourth when Jaimen Caba stole second and scored on Howard’s single to left.

Montgomery County extended the lead in the sixth. Brayden Dore walked, stole second and scored on Abe Mullins’ single to right. Mullins later scored on Talan Stevens’ fielder’s choice, Jaxsen Oney scored on Poe’s single to center, and Marcus Wells came home when Turner drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 7-0.

Nicholas County scored its run in the seventh after Easton Adams reached on an error, Ethan Ritchie walked and Bentley Crump was hit by a pitch. Jayden Robinson grounded into a fielder’s choice to score Adams.

Taj Jones earned the win for Montgomery County, allowing three hits over four scoreless innings while striking out five and walking two. Poe went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Mays also had two hits. Turner drove in two runs. For Nicholas County, Cash Linville went 2-for-3, and Robinson had a hit and drove in the team’s only run. Ritchie took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits over five innings.

Nicholas County’s season ends at 19-20 and Easton Adams was named to the All-Tournament Team. Montgomery County moves to 29-7.

Scott 7, Mason County 1

Scott scored in five different innings to beat Mason County in the 10th Region quarterfinals. The Eagles finished with 11 hits, including back-to-back solo home runs from Jay Race and Andy Reed in the second inning. The two home runs were over the MAC’s “Green Monster” in left field, which has a distance of 280-290 feet with 20-foot tall green fence.

Race earned the win for Scott, allowing one run on two hits over 5.1 innings while striking out seven and walking six. He also went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Reed, Trey Cook, and Smith each had two hits for Scott, with Reed scoring twice and driving in a run. 

Carter Roark took the loss for Mason County, allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits over six innings. Crabtree drove in Mason County’s run, while Micah Payne, Brady Mefford, Workman and Crabtree each had one hit. Micah Payne was named to the All-Tournament Team. 

Mason County’s season ends at 14-15. Scott moves to 17-18 and plays Montgomery County in the semifinals on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
