Both teams have undoubtedly earned their way to the title game. The Royals knocked off the best two teams in the region, Harrison County (4-3) and George Rogers Clark (6-3), while the Colonels defeated Bracken County (1-0) and Campbell County (3-1). The winner of the 10th will face Lexington Catholic on Thursday, June 6, at 8:30 pm at Lexington Legends Field.

Both teams come in as district runners-up and were swept 3-0 by their district rivals. Mason County lost the 39th to Bracken County, and Bourbon County lost the 40th to George Rogers Clark.

Bourbon County will be the “visiting team” and bat first. Mason County will be the home team and bat in the bottom half of the innings. This was decided by a coin flip at the region draw meeting.

Pitching:

Both teams will have their number two in the rotation for the championship game. Mason County will have junior Cray Fite on the mound. Fite has closed out both games for the Royals in the region so far. He threw 29 pitches vs. Harrison in two innings of relief, giving up 1 hit, 1 walk, and 0 runs. Against GRC, he threw one inning, giving up 1 walk with no hits in 15 pitches. Before the tournament, Fite had thrown 47.1 innings with a 3.11 ERA, giving up 37 hits, 18 walks, 29 runs, 21 earned runs, and 55 strikeouts with a record of 4-1.

Bourbon County has sophomore Jake Scott on the mound, who has the lowest ERA in the region at 0.40. Scott has thrown 35 innings, giving up 28 hits, 8 walks, 11 runs, 2 earned runs, and 37 strikeouts with a record of 4-2.

History:

Mason County has only been to the championship game once before, in 1994, when they won the region. They are 1-0 in championship games. They were coached by Kenny Brammer.

Bourbon County is looking for its first region title in school history. They have made the championship game five times: 1987, 2006, 2010, 2011, and 2014. Longtime coach Larry Conrad led the Colonels from the 1970s until 2001, when Nelson Faris took over.
