Nicholas County 73, Augusta 66
The Bluejackets won their first regional tournament game since 1992 thanks to a stellar third quarter to beat Augusta 73-66.
Augusta started off hot under Jason Hinson, who was coaching his 18th season in the 10th Region. With 5:45 in the first quarter, the Panthers led 9-2 after back-to-back threes from Noland Young and Keeton Bach.
Freshman Maddox Hesler made 3 threes and a putback layup, which helped Augusta mount a 22-3 lead with 2:41 left in the first. It would be their largest lead of the game, and first-year Nicholas County coach Spencer Morris, who had bleached his hair before the game, called a timeout.
Augusta closed out the first quarter leading 22-10 and led 38-27 at halftime.
The Bluejackets would start the second half on an 11-3 run, causing Jason Hinson to call a timeout.
Maddox Donovan’s putback would give Nicholas County their first lead of the night, 46-45.

Nicholas County outscored Augusta 24-11 in the third quarter and led 51-49.
The Bluejackets retained the lead, outscoring Augusta again in the fourth quarter 22-17. It was Nicholas County’s first regional tournament win since 1992, when Daniel Brown and Travis Sims played.

Freshman Peyton Hatton led Nicholas with 22 points and Maddox Donovan scored 12. Augusta was led by Maddox Hesler with 17 points and Keeton Bach with 16 points. Will Kelsch was named to the All-Tournament team.

George Rogers Clark 57, Campbell County 52
Although on opposite ends of the region, George Rogers Clark and Campbell County have become blueblood basketball rivals in the 10th Region. The two have won 11 of the last 14 region titles. Although Campbell led most of the game, Clark’s fourth quarter comeback gave the Cardinals a 57-52 win over the Camels.
Campbell County was without leading scorer and rebounder Austin Davie. The 6’4” freshman was averaging 17.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. He broke his hand two weeks ago trying to catch his fall after getting fouled on a wide-open layup in the district championship versus Bishop Brossart.
Campbell County got off to a 7-0 start, which caused GRC coach Josh Cook to call a timeout less than two minutes into the game. Lucas Anthrop’s three made it 14-7 Camels with 1:48 left in the quarter. Campbell led 16-7 after the first quarter.
Clark County battled back from a nine-point deficit in the second quarter, cutting the lead to two points before ending the half down 20-18 to the Camels. Lucas Anthrop for Campbell and Montez Gay for Clark both had 12 points in the first half.

GRC’s leading scorer and point guard Malachi Ashford would tie it up at 41 with 18.3 seconds left in the third quarter with a basket, foul, and free throw. Two free throws from Garyn Jackson with a few seconds left gave Campbell County the 43-41 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
With 6:27 left in the game, Montez Gay would make a three to give GRC their first lead of the night, 46-45. Garyn Jackson answered with a three of his own for Campbell. But, not to be outdone, Eli Craig answered that for GRC, giving Clark the 49-48 lead with 5:25 left.
The Cardinals held onto the lead for the rest of the game after several challenges from Camel shooters. Xavier Fancher made a three with 2:44 left to make it 53-52, which was as close as Campbell would get.

Lucas Anthrop, who also plays baseball and is quarterback of the football team, led Campbell County with 23 points going 4 of 8 from three. He was named to the All-Tournament team.
George Rogers Clark improves to 26-5 and Campbell County’s season ends at 22-10. GRC will face Nicholas County in the semifinals on Monday.
