Twenty-two years after he thought he’d coached his last game, Hall of Fame coach Lex Turner is back on the sideline at 73-years-old like he never left. Friday night, he guided St. Patrick to a 60-57 upset win over crosstown rival Mason County—its first against the Royals since 2000.
Amari Myrick led the Saints with 30 points. Mason County, however, was without their leading scorer Ben Brookbank (17.7 ppg).
The 1999-2000 St. Patrick team was the best in school history. With a record of 20-9, the Saints won the 10th Region All “A” Classic and 39th District Tournament. They also beat Mason County in the Fieldhouse earlier that season 75-57.
St. Patrick had beaten Mason County in the 2000 39th District finals at Fleming County. Jordan Owens led the Saints with 39 points and Ike Poe added 15. The Royals were led by Seth Faulkner with 16 points and Robert Myrick with 14 points. That Mason County team finished 17-14 under Kelly Wells and lost in the regional championship to Bishop Brossart 52-50.
St. Patrick improves to 5-7 and Mason County falls to 2-12.
Much like the 37th District, the 39th District is wide open.
