Smiley hits two birthday bombs to beat Bourbon

CYNTHIANA, KY — Mason Smiley turned 18 years old on Monday. He celebrated by hitting two homeruns in their 6-2 win over Bourbon County in the first round of the 10th Region Tournament.

Mason Smiley started off the scoring by hitting a homerun in the bottom of the 2nd inning to deep right-center.

Cameron White started off the third inning with a walk in the 4 spot. Then, Mason Smiley hit another homerun, this time to left field, to make the score 3-0 Thorobreds.

The Bourbon County pitcher JT Ritchie was replaced by Cain Flynn in the bottom of the 4th. Ritchie is a freshman and came in with a 0.77 ERA.

The Harrison County offensive got hot in the 4th after the pitching change.

Brian Vaughn hit a double to left-field. Then, lead-off man Elijah Harris singled to left scoring Vaughn and giving the Breds a 4-0 lead.

Cliffy McIlvain walked and Corey Vaughn hit into an error scoring two more runs to the Breds up 6-0.

Back to the top of the 5th inning, starter Corey Vaughn was still pitching and had 7 strikeouts. After a two-out walk, Corey Vaughn loaded the count to another batter.

Corey Vaughn threw exactly 75 pitches, which leaves the door open for him to pitch in the championship game if the Breds can make it that far.

Elijah Harris came in to pitch and threw one pitch for a ball, walking Jake Scott. Clay Estes walked on four straight pitches after that, putting runners on first and second with two outs.

After a wild pitch, both runners advanced into scoring position when the Harrison County catcher threw the ball over the 3rd baseman’s head, scoring two runs on the throwing error.

That would be the only two runs Bourbon County would score. Jacob Cracraft came in and held the Colonels scoreless the next two innings.
