With Mason County’s win over Augusta on Wednesday night at the historic Augusta Gymnasium, the Polar Bears have claimed the top seed in the 39th District Boys Basketball Tournament at the Fieldhouse in two weeks.
According to the seeding plan listed on the KHSAA website, a two-way tie is broken by head-to-head results and then goes to the KHSAA’s RPI system. RPI is calculated for seeding the morning after the last district game played.

Augusta and Mason County played a close game throughout. Mason led 21-20 after one, and Augusta led 34-32 at the half. The Royls got out in front 47-42 after three.
Mason County led 59-53 with 1:08 left in the game. Ely Dean scored in the paint to make it a two-point game with 26.2 seconds left, 59-57. After a basket each way, Augusta had a chance to tie it at the buzzer, but Maddox Hesler’s contested floater in the paint was just off the mark.
Mason County improves to 4-6, and Augusta drops to 7-13.
