UPDATE: Sears still plans to attend Montgomery County despite the recent coaching change on Monday. The family has ties to Somerset and the move makes them closer. His eligibility is still pending KHSAA approval.
Montgomery County, coached by Jason Mays, has landed a major transfer that was announced just two days before the season starts.
Austin Sears has transferred from North Oldham to Montgomery County as first reported by Jason Frakes of the Louisville Courier-Journal. Sears averaged 16.2 points per game as a freshman for the Mustangs last season. He already has Division I offers from Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State. His eligibility still depends on KHSAA approval.
Sears was listed on North Oldham’s roster as of Saturday morning. He is pictured in the team photo posted just five days ago on the North Oldham basketball Twitter account, and was at practice for North Oldham this week.
In the Herald-Leader coaches poll, North Oldham was ranked as the 12th-best team in the state and favored to win the 8th Region. Sears was voted as the 11th best player in the state and best in the 8th Region.
Austin’s younger brother, Chase Spears, will be a freshman this year and is expected to transfer as well.
