Boys Basketball:
George Rogers Clark at Montgomery County
The Cardinals defeated the Indians in a triple overtime thriller in Mt. Sterling. It showcased two of the best guards in the region, Cayden Reed and Malachi Ashford. Ashford scored 24 and Reed put up 27. Clark was able to pull away in the third overtime period after getting the tip and outscoring MoCo 9-1. Scott 56, Bishop Brossart 45
The Scott High Eagles traveled to Alexandria to face off in a 37th district contest against the Mustangs of Bishop Brossart. Scott came out hot in the first quarter, ending the period with a 24-6 lead. Four Mustang starters did not play in the first quarter. Scott finished the first half with a 20-point advantage. The Mustangs were led in scoring from 20 points by senior Alex Combs and moved to 10-10 on the year. Scott had four players in double digits in their victorious effort and advanced to 8-10.
Holy Cross (Covington) 66, Mason County 52
The Royals headed to the 9th Region to take on Holy Cross in Covington. Holy Cross ended the first with a 14-10 lead and extended their lead to 33-21 by halftime. Mason was led by sophomore Braeden Myrick and Senior Garryon McClain, who scored 19 and 17 points, respectively. The Royals shot just 26% from three (5/19). Mason County falls to 9-9, and Holy Cross improves to 10-7.
Nicholas County 73, Pendleton County 68
In their last meeting 2 weeks ago, the Nicholas County Blue Jackets narrowly defeated the Pendleton County Wildcats at home by a score of 58-56. This time in Falmouth, the Wildcats were looking to take advantage of playing on their home court in this 38th district contest. The first quarter ended 14-13, with Nicholas County having the one-point advantage. At halftime, Pendleton County had a one-point lead of their own, 33-32. Nicholas County widened the margin by the end of the 3rd with a 7-point lead. Pendleton drops to 11-7 while Nicholas goes to 13-7. The Blue Jackets had four players in double figures, led by 19 points from senior Maddox Donovan, and the Wildcats were paced by 19 points from sophomore Kamden O’Hara.
Augusta 87, St. Patrick 45
The Panthers rolled past the Saints and moved to 13-6.
Robertson County at Harrison County
The Thorbreds are only 6-11 now, but they are 4-1 against 38th District opponents. Robertson County dropped to 4-13.
Girls Basketball:
Pendleton County 56, Nicholas County 44
When these teams faced off in Carlisle on January 17th, it took 49 points from Nicholas County sophomore Maggie Simmons for the Lady Jackets to win in OT. This time around, Pendleton County flipped the script. After being knotted up at 12 after the first eight minutes, Pendleton County went into halftime up 28-24. The Lady Cats extended their lead from 4 to 7 by the end of the 3rd. Pendleton had three players in double digits, led by 13 points from junior Lilly Ashcraft. Pendleton moves to 9-11, and Nicholas goes to 14-7.
Augusta 77, St. Patrick 34
The Lady Panthers wrapped up district play with a win over the Lady Saints. Augusta led at halftime 31-18. St. Patrick only had three players in the scoring column, led by Lillian Klee with 21. Augusta had nine players get in the scoring column. They were led by sisters Reagan and Laci Tackett who scored 20 points each. Kenzington HInson added 18. Augusta moves to 9-12, and St. Patrick falls to 3-14.
Bourbon County 46, Bracken County 36
After hanging 104 points on Robertson County less than 24 hours ago, the Lady Bears were held to just 36 points in their home loss to the Lady Colonels. Morgan Howell had 12 for Bourbon (10-12). Brianna Bauer led with 11 for Bracken (11-8).
Harrison County 76, Robertson County 33
The Fillies hosted the Lady Devils in a 38th district contest. Harrison County kept up their pace from their last meeting and got the victory on homecoming with a final of 76-33. The Fillies had three players in double figures and were led in scoring by senior Hayden Lunsford’s 15 points. Harrison advances to 11-10 on the year and Robertson is now 6-11.
George Rogers Clark 72, Butler 39
The Lady Cards rolled past Butler in the Louisville Invitational Tournament quarterfinals. GRC is now 13-5 and undefeated against in-state opponents. Clark led 18-7 at the end of one and 40-25 at the half. They opened up the second half on a 16-0 run and outscored Butler 18-4 in the third. Ten players scored for the Lady Cards, and Ciara Byars led with 12 points.
