Two-time Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association 10th Region Player of the Year Milyn Minor still wears the Scott Eagles uniform.
Thus, the Eagles (31-12 last year) will be favored to repeat as region champs. Minor finds different ways to put balls down. She ended the state’s first round tournament with a smackdown on a West Jessamine overpass. She grew during club season playing a defensive specialist role for the top Tri-State Elite 17 Blue team.
Four seniors graduated for the Eagles including outside hitter Brooklyn Helm, now at Thomas More University, and libero Elise Manhardt. However, a lot of the supporting cast returns in senior blocker Morgan Justice, senior setter Ryann Grigsby and senior all-around Payton Grigsby. Senior Reagan Cummins looks to contribute on the outside and sophomore Jacinda Campbell will play outside hitter and defensive specialist. Sophomore Emory Sullivan played libero at the Bluegrass Games.
Veteran head coach Andrea Sullivan listed solid defense as a key to success. The Eagles can run a fast-tempo offense with Ryann Grigsby. Coach Sullivan added the Eagles need aggressive serving and creativity with lineups to be able to control the net against bigger teams.
Scott ventures to Beechwood on Aug. 18.
Montgomery County (26-13) is the lone team outside the 37th District to win the region since the current alignment formed in 2012. The Indians have the size to challenge this year, including two six-footers with senior outside Alexis White and sophomore middle blocker Erin Fawns. Junior middle blocker Baylee Warner adds size at 5-11 and sophomore outside/right side hitter Anna Allison is 5-10.
Head coach Bradley Craycraft said it is just a matter of getting in system with first touches. Senior Kate Conn is now the setter in the 5-1 attack and junior Sophie Fouh is the libero. Craycraft also mentioned six-rotation senior Ellie Lewis and senior middle/opposite hitter Janelle Miller as players to watch.
Craycraft wants his team to stay aggressive when down late in matches. He also said the Indians need to improve their blocking.
The Indians open at Frederick Douglass on Aug. 20.
37th District
Bishop Brossart (26-12)
The Mustangs had a nice run to the region championship last year. However, Kate Neltner graduated and junior pin Chloe Hershey transferred so the team has question marks after 6-2 middle blocker Callie Ritter.
Junior Leah Robinson could be another option in the middle and senior Madison Dozier hopes to take big swings at the pins. The Mustangs return junior setter Aubrey Rebholz for her fourth season on varsity and sophomore Grace Frommeyer returns to the libero spot. Junior Josie Reckner is back at defensive specialist. The Mustangs also expect senior Payton Marshall to play defensive specialist or set some.
Bishop Brossart opens the season with a tough game against Highlands on Monday.
Campbell County (7-21)
One year after winning the region, the Camels endured a tough season. They graduated a lot of size on that 2023 team.
Senior setter Hope Hamilton and senior outside hitter Faith Whitford saw the most action in 2023. Senior Sydney Lyons and junior outside hitters Lydia Fry and Amerie Mullins hope to give the Camels the balance they are used to seeing.
Third-year head coach Mikah Freppon said the returning players have been present at every drill and laying it all on the line. Freppon added they have been working at it in the gym and weight room since February and the efforts are showing.
Campbell County plays Beechwood in Alexandria on Aug. 19.
Calvary Christian (12-16)
Despite not always having the most talent or depth in the region, head coach Becky Stelzer and staff find different ways to get everything they can out of the player.
Calvary Christian features senior Anna Hickey and Sophomore Megan Arthur on the outside. Stelzer said freshman Madison Stelzer is one to watch.
Coach Stelzer said freshmen fill half the roster spots. She said the team needs to grow during practices and games and give everything possible no matter who is on the other side of the net to achieve goals.
Calvary Christian takes Bellevue and Grant County in the Ludlow Invitational on Tuesday.
38th District
Harrison County (23-15)
Similar to last year, the Fillies graduated a large senior class. The hope is the likes of senior twins Lexie Highlander at setter and outside/opposite hitter Lauren Highlander will lead the inexperienced players so they learn enthusiasm and discipline to help the program.
Two others return with varsity experience. They are junior 6-2 middle blocker/right side hitter Audree Whitaker and senior outside hitter Shyanne Ross.
Augusta comes to Cynthiana on Aug. 18 in the season opener for both teams.
Nicholas County (15-15)
If the Jackets play together and keep everyone’s spirits up, head coach Kim Denkins said she’s told the girls there is no reason they can not win the district.
Denkins said the team tried to run a 6-2 last year and would not mind implementing it, adding it’s gone well in practice. Denkins also said she’s noticed a different attitude this year in open gyms.
The 5-11 senior Morgan Broderick finds ways to control the net coming off a good club season for Alpha Performance in Georgetown. Junior setter Alison Reid also played at Alpha. Senior Sadie Vice is the libero and senior Kylie Earlywine will take swings from the outside. Denkins also said sophomore middle blocker Danica Amburgey has a good vertical.
Nicholas County ventures east to Lewis County on Aug. 21.
Pendleton County (22-7)
The Cats won the district crown for the first time since 2012.
It will be a challenge to do it again with the graduation of five seniors. Head coach Marian Rice called it a rebuilding year so the team is concentrating on finding a good rhythm on the court and team bonding. The hope is to see the team have fun, put in the work, lay things on the line each night and see how things turn out.
Rice named four key players for the Cats. They are senior defensive specialist Isabella Roberts, Gracie Cotterman at middle blocker, junior Madison Gosney at right side and junior Pypr McCloud at middle blocker.
Pendleton County ventures north on US 27 on Monday to face Dayton.
Robertson County (12-19)
Anne Grause has led the team for more than 20 years. The Devils saw four players graduate including all-around Emma Adamson. Senior libero Irene Dischar is a key returning player.
Bracken County comes to Mount Olivet on Aug. 18.
39th District
Bracken County (25-13)
The Bears broke the program record for wins in a season and won the district for the second consecutive season. Five players graduated, but a good group returns.
Senior outside hitter Macy Lucas and middle blocker Jordan Ahrens are back. Senior Baylee Wilson and junior Rees Hargett shared setting duties last year with senior Makenzie Rudd back as a defensive specialist. Senior Ashley Stafford is back as a threat on the outside and at defensive specialist. Sophomore Izzy Godman hopes to take big swings from the outside.
Head coach Julie Krift said serve receiving and defense, specifically blocking have been focuses in order for the Bears to be able to beat bigger, more experienced teams. Krift also listed more points on serving and offensive balance as keys to success and playing aggressive with expectation of winning every point. Krift added the setters are working on a more complex offense trying to help the hitters beat bigger blocks.
Bracken County ventures to Robertson County on Monday.
Augusta (6-21)
The Panthers are switching from a 5-1 to a 6-2 offense under new head coach and former player Paige McCord, who graduated from there in 2015. McCord said she hopes the passing improves and players adjust to different positions with the graduation of four players.
Former player Paige McCord, a 2015 graduate, takes over the program and has switched offensive formations from the 5-1 to the 6-2. McCord said she wants to see the passing improve and see players adjust to different positions after four seniors graduated.
Junior Adalen Gilliam is back after finishing second on the team in digs last year. The Panthers saw junior Natalee Roberts play libero in the Rowan County scrimmages and senior Isabella Schweitzer play defensive specialist. Schweitzer and freshman Kahghan Hinson played the setter spot. Senior middle blocker Makayla Woodruff hopes to bring versatility to the team. Junior Claire Elliott and freshman Aryanna Davis hope to contribute in the middle.
Augusta heads to Harrison County on Monday.
Mason County (12-19)
Head coach Nellie Book mentioned the word chaos when talking about keys to a success for the program that played its first varsity season in 2010.
Book wants to see good communication, court awareness, coverage hard work, nice assists and anticipation as well as good passes off the net, but in front of the 10-foot line. Book added she’d like to see solid serves and swings.
Mason County returns experienced players at each position. Junior Hayley Allison is back at libero and senior Halle Pfeffer brings back experience at defensive specialist. Junior Kyleigh Kirk quarterbacks the offense well at setter with senior Makaylynn Crabtree coming back after a nice season last year.
Mason County heads to Paris on Monday.
St. Patrick (2-20)
The Saints are just three years removed from a district championship. They struggled last year, though, and new head coach Caitlyn Gallenstein hopes to turn things around.
Some experienced players return for Gallenstein and staff to build on. Senior outside hitter Lillian Klee and eighth grader Mia Neeley are two of them.
St. Patrick heads to Robertson County on Tuesday.
40th District
George Rogers Clark (17-11)
Head coach Kainan Hudson is in his fifth season building the program.
Hudson said the group can have a good season if they play as one. Hudson said his big focus is seeing the players have fun this season.
Sophomore setter Anna Cooper returns with a year of experience leading the offense. Last year’s kills leader in senior outside/defensive specialist Teigh Yeast is back and so is senior defensive specialist Kinlee Keltner. George Rogers Clark has the 6-3 Hollins Pumphery in the middle with sophomore Addison Palmer playing libero. Freshman outside hitter/defensive specialist Elayna Swart plays all six positions with sophomore outside hitter Brooke Gough coming in off a good club season at Alpha Performance in Georgetown.
The Cardinals welcome in Estill County on Tuesday.
Bourbon County (19-16)
The Colonels went 5-1 in district play last year to earn the top see in the district tournament, but did not play well after the ball break, thus falling one win shy of 20 on the season.
Cassidy Gilbert is the new head coach. The Colonels graduated eight seniors from last year including libero Rylee Barnes, who is at Centre College in Danville.
Senior Marleigh Estes at setter/right side hitter has the most varsity experience. Junior Izzy Jett hopes to hop into the libero role after good club season at Alpha Performance in Georgetown and Gilbert also said to watch out for senior outside hitter/defensive specialist Macey Mckinzie.
Bourbon County goes south to Madison Central on Tuesday.
Paris (13-17)
The Hounds won 10 more games last year than they did the first two. They even took top-seeded Bourbon County to five games before falling in the district semifinals a year ago.
Head coach Steven Abner is trying to get the players to come together as one. He hopes to get them mentally prepared, noting some players are still learning the game. Abner also said the Hounds can hit the top part of the region if those things occur.
Freshman Mia Mason did a good job setting at the Bluegrass Games and junior Molly Mason brings power from the outside. Sophomore outside hitter Katie Abner comes back as the team’s kill leader from a year ago. Seniors Callie Ball and Tiana Jones want to make noise on the outside with junior Angie Romero taking the libero role and freshman Emma Morris contributing on defense. Freshman Emmy Ogden wants to take good swings on the outside and freshman Gabby Gardner wants to contribute in the middle.
Paris faces visiting Mason County on Monday.
