LEXINGTON, Ky. — Winchester, colloquially known as “Win-City,” is the undisputed capital of Kentucky high school basketball, as George Rogers Clark swept the Sweet 16 State Championships in back-to-back weeks at Rupp Arena (both against 7th Region private schools).
While many rankers and predictors believed the real state championship game was the opening round game between St. Xavier and Covington Catholic on Wednesday morning, George Rogers Clark brought home the 2026 UK HealthCare Boys Basketball Sweet 16® championship banner and gold ball trophy on Saturday night by defeating St. Xavier 58-50 in overtime.

GRC won four games in 48 hours. Their wins against Johnson Central (75-60) on Thursday and Marshall County (63-59) on Friday both tipped off at 8:30 p.m. They turned around to beat North Oldham (53-45) in the 1:30 p.m. game on Saturday afternoon before beating St. Xavier Saturday night in the 7:30 p.m. championship.
Despite the quick turnaround, the Cardinals displayed championship grit, battled injuries and fatigue, and persevered through it all by shooting 14-for-16 from the free throw line in the four-minute overtime period to win their second title in five years.

The Cardinals erased a late four-point deficit, forced an extra period on Montez Gay’s tying dunk with 1:19 left. The title is George Rogers Clark’s second in five seasons and third overall (1951, 2022, 2026) and completed a girls-boys Sweet 16® sweep, the first such double in Kentucky since 1928 when Ashland won both titles. Twice is nice for Josh Cook, who also won his second title in his decade as head coach at GRC. Read our interview with Josh Cook before the season here.
The fourth quarter was where the game kept turning.
St. Xavier opened the quarter by stretching its lead to 37-31, its largest advantage of the night, after Connor Klein hit a 3-pointer. At that point, the Tigers had control of the tempo and had spent most of the evening playing from in front.
George Rogers Clark had already trailed after the first quarter, at halftime and after three quarters, and this looked like another moment when St. Xavier might be able to close it out and win their first title since 1962.
Instead, GRC kept answering.
Every time St. Xavier made a play to create separation, the Cardinals found a response. The deficit never got away from them, as St. Xavier’s largest lead was only six points in a game that featured two ties and seven lead changes.
St. Xavier could not deliver the one basket or one stop that could fully break GRC’s resistance. St. Xavier held the lead for 13 minutes and 53 seconds of the 16-minute second half, while GRC was in front for only 28 seconds.
The turning sequence came in the final three minutes of regulation.
St. Xavier held a 44-40 lead. The Cardinals defended without allowing the Tigers to score again, then got the equalizer when Gay slipped open near the basket and hammered home a dunk with 1:19 remaining to tie it at 44.

St. Xavier still had a chance to win in the final seconds, but the Tigers could not finish at the rim. Jeremiah Jackson lost control of the ball on his way to the basket before the buzzer.
St. Xavier’s offense cooled, and GRC’s defense tightened as the game went on.
Josh Lindsay scored 11 points in the first half for the Tigers but did not score after halftime.
In overtime, George Rogers Clark did not make a field goal. They didn’t need one.
Senior point guard and KABC 10th Region Player of the Year Malachi Ashford was named Most Valuable Player of the Sweet 16, as he was 9 of 10 on foul shots in overtime, leading GRC with 18 points.

The Cardinals scored all 14 of their overtime points at the free-throw line and outscored St. Xavier 14-6 over the extra four minutes. After having free-throw trouble earlier in the tournament, GRC was nearly flawless in the biggest stretch of the game.
WinCity had won again.

The Cardinals shot 17 of 39 from the field, 4 of 10 from 3-point range and 20 of 22 from the free-throw line. They finished with 29 rebounds, eight assists, 10 turnovers, five steals and four blocks. They scored 24 points in the paint and led only 8:43 of game time, but they made their push at the right time. GRC scored 13 points in the fourth quarter and 14 more in overtime after scoring only seven in the third.
Ashford led the Cardinals with 18 points, four rebounds and three assists. JaMylyn Johnson added 15 points. Ryder Akins had 10 points and five rebounds. Gay finished with nine points and eight rebounds, and his late dunk was the biggest basket of regulation. Amari Bartelson defended the interior with four blocks.
St. Xavier finished 19 of 47 from the floor, 6 of 25 from 3-point range and 6 of 13 from the line. The Tigers held edges in second-chance points (9-2) and fast-break points (15-4), but those advantages faded in importance once the game slowed down late and shifted into a half-court finish built on stops and free throws.

George Rogers Clark did not dominate the game, they grinded through it. And when the final minutes demanded poise more than pace, the Cardinals were better.
The team celebrated back in the Ale-8-One capital of Win-City Saturday night with a police escort and 26 buses of fans returning home.
