The Thorobreds and Fillies baseball and softball teams both won the 10th Region Championships last Thursday. They will be headed to the state tournament this weekend. Here’s a wrap-up of the semifinals and finals from the tournaments:

Baseball:
Harrison County 5, Montgomery County 4 (Championship)
The Thorobreds won their 23rd regional title after a 9-inning battle with the Indians.
In the top of the 8th, Brian Vaughn was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, putting Harrison County up 4-3 over Montgomery County. In the bottom half of the inning, Jaimen Caba would homer to left field to tie things back up 4-4.
Onto the top of the 9th, after a hit by a pitch and a sacrifice bunt, it would be Sean Vaughn hitting an RBI double to give the Thorobreds the go-ahead run and lead 5-4.
Cooper Slade threw a complete game on the mound. He went all 9 innings giving up 15 hits, four runs, one earned run, one walk, and striking out two. He threw 110 pitches and 73 strikes.
Jaimen Caba was the Montgomery County starter who had a solid outing as well. He threw 7 innings with six hits, three runs, five walks, and two strikeouts.
Harrison County 8, George Rogers Clark 4 (Semifinals)
A solo home run from Cardinals sophomore Tielor Howie gave them an early 1-0 lead. However, a quick three-run response from the Thorobreds stifled momentum, and a five-run fourth inning put Harrison County in the driver’s seat to make a return to the 10th Region championship after a one-year hiatus.
Thorohbreds senior Jashon Lewis had a game-high three RBIs, all coming via a fourth-inning, three-run deep shot that gave them an 8-2 lead. Senior Boston Reynolds and junior Sean Vaughn added an RBI apiece in the win, but five GRC errors allowed Harrison County to capitalize. Vaughn was also on the bump for the Thorobreds, tossing a complete game that included four strikeouts, seven hits and three earned runs on 117 total pitches.
For the Cardinals, sophomore Abrahm Howard contributed a pair of RBIs thanks to a two-run home run over left-center that made it 8-4 in the fifth. Four pitchers combined to throw seven strikeouts, but it wasn’t enough as GRC fell in the 10th Region semifinals for a second consecutive year.
Montgomery County 5, Campbell County 2 (Semifinals)
After four innings, the Camels looked to be in complete control and heading for another 10th Region championship appearance. But that’s why games are seven innings.
A bases-loaded sacrifice fly broke the deadlock in the top of the first. Then, Campbell County added another in the third through an RBI single from senior Nate Delaney. After a few scoreless frames and the Camels hanging on to a 2-0 lead, the bottom of the fifth came, where the game took a complete turn.
Indians junior Jaimen Caba’s sacrifice fly got them on the board, before junior Jayse Mays tied things at 2 with an RBI single. Moments later, sophomore Brayden Dore launched a three-run bomb to left field, giving MoCo its first lead of the game at 5-2. It was all the Indians needed.
Sophomore Evan Copher finished the win with four Ks, two earned runs and six hits with 113 pitches. On the other side, senior Zach Franzen struck out eight MoCo batters and gave up four hits.
Softball:
Harrison County 8, Campbell County 0 (Championship)
After defeating the Lady Camels in the regional championship, the Fillies will head to the state tournament with a 33-6 record. It was a 3-0 game headed into the bottom of the 6th, when Harrison County put up five runs. The Camels had five hits to the Fillies’ 10, and the Camels had four errors.
Allison Dye, Aleigha Newby, and Emma Hamm hit doubles, while Bella Persinger hit a solo home run in the first inning.
Bella Persinger pitched a complete game in the circle. She gave up five hits, no runs, one walk, and struck out six.
Harrison County 6, Mason County 1 (Semifinals)
The Fillies got off to a hot start and didn’t look back. With runners on first and second and no outs, junior Bella Persinger’s RBI single broke the deadlock in the top of the first. A subsequent walk loaded the bases before eighth grader Aleigha Newby got her first of three hits on the day, adding a second run in the opening frame. Newby’s second came in the top of the third when an RBI double made it 3-0. A pair of errors in the following inning extended Harrison County’s lead to five, and senior Owyn McCoy tacked on a sixth run with an RBI double. Mason County’s lone run came in the bottom of the sixth when a single from senior Reese Hardeman brought in sophomore Kylah Turner.
Fillies junior Shyanne Ross had an impressive outing, tossing 12 strikeouts through five innings and giving up no hits in the process—all while keeping it under 90 pitches (89).
Campbell County 7, Montgomery County 2 (Semifinals)
A two-run first inning from the Lady Indians put them in control early. A two-out, RBI single from senior Sara Zink made it 1-0, and senior Madison Cox doubled the lead after scoring on a wild pitch. The Lady Indians would hold on to that 2-0 lead for the majority of the game, but then came the bottom of the sixth inning.
MoCo needed just one out to end the inning, but junior Faith Whitford got the Lady Camels on the board with an RBI triple. The game made its full 180°-turn following a single from senior Moriah Price and a bases-loaded walk. At 3-2 and the bases still juiced, things went from bad to worse for the Lady Indians when sophomore Josie Feebeck launched a grand slam to make it 7-2. Campbell County junior Hope Hamilton finished the job in the top of the seventh, and punched her school’s ticket to its second-ever 10th Region championship appearance (2017). That one also came against Harrison County, with the Fillies winning 6-1.
