Boys Basketball Review & Rankings: Week 11

We are headed into Week 12, the last week of the regular season, as teams get their final tune-ups in before district tournaments start next week. You can see the district tournament schedule here and the regional and state tournament schedules here. This review reflects games played Monday, Feb. 9, through Saturday, Feb. 14.

1. George Rogers Clark (21-4) — The Cardinals have won five straight since their loss at Lexington Catholic on Feb. 3. They defeated defending state champion Great Crossing 83-57 in Georgetown. Ryder Akins led GRC with 23 points, and Montez Gay added 20 points and seven rebounds. The Cardinals also rolled past Mercer County.

Gay leads GRC at 17.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Akins adds 15.5 points per game, and point guard Malachi Ashford averages 12.7 points per game. Akins leads the team in 3-point percentage, shooting 49 of 130 (37.7%).

Coach Josh Cook’s team closes the regular season by hosting North Laurel and Mr. Basketball candidate Reece Davidson on Monday. The Cardinals host Western Hills and travel to West Jessamine to round out the week.

2. Montgomery County (14-10) — The Indians closed district play with wins over Bourbon County (91-68) and Paris (79-46). Andrew Terry and Austin Sears scored 32 points apiece against Bourbon. Sears went 8 of 11 from 3-point range, and Terry shot 13 of 17 from the field. Terry had 10 rebounds, and Sears added seven.

Sophomore Sears has played in only seven games this season but is averaging more than 24 points per game to lead the team. Terry, also a sophomore, averages 20.3 points per game and a team-high 9.7 rebounds per game.

The Indians host Scott on Tuesday, travel to Trinity in Louisville on Thursday, and host Boyd County and Mr. Basketball candidate Jacob Spurlock at 4 p.m. Saturday.

3. Campbell County (18-9) — The Camels lost to Ryle, then edged Nicholas County by one point in Claryville. Austin Davie scored a school-record 50 points, breaking the previous mark of 44 set by Davey Johnson (2002-04), now the program’s girls coach. Davie also threw down a one-handed dunk on an and-one to give Campbell County an 81-78 lead with 2 minutes left. He added 10 rebounds for a double-double. Cade Anthrop scored 18 points.

Sophomore Davie averages 25.3 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. Sophomore Cade Anthrop averages 10.8 points per game, and Lucas Anthrop adds 9.5 points per game. Cade Anthrop leads the starters in 3-point shooting, going 37 of 96 (38.5%). Campbell County hosts St. Henry on Tuesday.

4. Bourbon County (17-10) — The Colonels moved up a spot after a 59-55 win over Nicholas County in Carlisle. Noah Earlywine had 20 points and nine rebounds. Bourbon County also defeated Harrison County 80-47.

Earlywine averages 19.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. Senior Nash Wilson, who was averaging 12.3 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, is out for the season. Coach Allen Martin’s team faces Madison Southern, Morgan County and Scott this week.

5. Nicholas County (18-9) — The Bluejackets split four games against 10th Region opponents. They defeated Harrison County 58-42 as Braxtin Martin scored 18 points and Caiden Smith grabbed 17 rebounds. Peyton Hatton scored 18 points in the loss to Bourbon County. Against Campbell County, Martin had 30 points, Hatton scored 28, and Smith added 22. Nicholas County locked up the district tournament’s No. 1 seed with a 75-65 win over Pendleton County on Saturday.

Freshman Hatton and senior Martin are both averaging 17.8 points per game. Smith adds 15.2 points per game and leads the team at 12.1 rebounds per game. The Bluejackets average 34 rebounds per game.

Coach Spencer Morris’ team closes the regular season against Ryle, Morgan County and Raceland.

6. Bishop Brossart (14-11) — The Mustangs went to The Fieldhouse and earned a 70-55 win over Mason County. Beckett Kuntz scored 33 points, hitting 5 of 12 from 3-point range. He shot 9 of 19 from the field and 10 of 12 from the free-throw line. Kuntz also scored 22 points in a 61-56 win over Harrison County. Bishop Brossart lost to Ryle 79-36.

Drew Steffen leads the Mustangs at 13 points per game, and Kuntz averages 12.4. Up next for Coach Ben Franzen’s team are county foes Bellevue and Newport Central Catholic.

7. Scott (13-11) — The Eagles beat Fleming County 78-65 and lost to Simon Kenton 69-60. Benjamin Brown scored 24 points against Fleming, and Jordan Clemons led with 18 points against Simon Kenton. Scott is without sophomore starter Ty Cook because of a knee ligament injury.

Freshman Benjamin Brown is averaging 22.8 points and 4 rebounds per game in 11 games. Clemons adds 13 points per game. Coach Steve Fromeyer’s Eagles play Walton-Verona, Montgomery County and Bourbon County this week.

8. Pendleton County (14-11) — The Wildcats beat Augusta 70-52 on the Ohio River as JaZi Grayson scored 29 points. He shot 10 of 17 from the field and 6 of 10 from 3-point range. Pendleton County also beat Boone County at home and defeated Mason County 69-52 at The Fieldhouse. The Wildcats closed the week with a 75-65 loss to Nicholas County, earning the No. 2 seed in the 38th District Tournament.

Grayson and Kamden O’Hara are both averaging more than 14 points per game. O’Hara is shooting 44.1% from 3-point range, making 78 of 177. Hunter Keeton leads the team at 6.3 rebounds per game. Coach Mason Monroe’s Wildcats host Fleming County and Grant County this week.

9. Paris (3-18) — The Greyhounds lost to Woodford County 73-61 and Montgomery County 79-46. Freshman Brayden Strait scored 25 points against Woodford County.

Sophomore Braylon Francis leads Paris at 14.4 points per game. The Greyhounds face Bryan Station and Sayre this week.

10. Mason County (4-17) — The Royals beat Augusta 61-59 and lost to Pendleton County. Ben Brookbank scored 23 points in the win over Augusta, shooting 10 of 11 from the field.

Brookbank, a senior, averages 17.8 points per game, and Jace Merz adds 12.5. Mason County faces Harrison County, Bath County and Greenup County this week.

11. Bracken County (13-12) — The Polar Bears lost two games in the 16th Region, falling to Fleming County 85-52 and Bath County 64-51. They ended the week with road wins over Menifee County and Villa Madonna.

Teegan Feldhaus leads Bracken County with 15.7 rebounds per game, and Greg Benedict and Kyler Burton average about 13.5 points per game. Burton, a 6-foot-7 forward, averages 9.6 rebounds per game. Coach Terry King’s team travels to Bellevue, Frankfort and East Carter this week.

12. Augusta (7-13) — The Panthers lost to Pendleton County 70-52 and Mason County 61-59. The loss to Mason County slotted Augusta as the No. 3 seed in the district tournament. Augusta is led by the sophomore trio of Maddox Hesler (16.9 points per game), Ely Dean (12.8) and Ross Carl (11.7).

13. Harrison County (5-20) — The Thorobreds have lost five straight. They fell to Nicholas County 58-42, Bishop Brossart 61-56 and Bourbon County 80-47. Seniors Landon Kinney and Sawyer Cracraft are averaging just more than 11 points per game.

14. Calvary Christian (16-9) — The Cougars lost to Bishop Brossart 56-45, slipping to the No. 4 seed in the 37th District Tournament. They also lost to Heritage Academy. Collin Duty scored 28 points against Heritage and is averaging 16 points per game.

15. St. Patrick (7-14) — Coach Lex Turner’s Saints have lost six straight entering Week 12. They fell to Fleming County 77-21 and to Robertson County 60-58. St. Patrick beat Robertson County 56-42 earlier this season.

16. Robertson County (4-21) — The Black Devils have won two straight, beating St. Patrick and Williamstown. Lucas Burden and Aston Myers each average about 12.5 points per game.
