Cayden Reed of Montgomery County goes up for a fast break layup

The 2025 10th Region Boys Basketball Tournament tipped off Monday night in Mt. Sterling. Here is a roundup of all the roundball action:

The Indians throttled the Thorobreds in the opening game of the 10th Region Tournament in Mt. Sterling.  The 62-point win margin is the largest ever in tournament history.

MoCo got up 12-2 just 90 seconds into the game when Cayden Reed got an uncontested offensive rebound on a free throw and made a three.  Luke Fawns followed that with a steal and fast break dunk.

Dawson Gentry made three 3’s in a row, making it a 21-6 game with five minutes left in the opening quarter.  Montgomery County led 32-6 at the end of the first quarter. 

Montgomery County got two steals and two easy fast-break scores 35 seconds into the second quarter, making it 36-6.

Luke Fawns’ three made it a 36-point game, 48-12, midway through the quarter.  The running clock does not start until the second half, though.  It was 60-12 at halftime, and the rest of the game would be played with a running clock.

Tyce Jarvis had 19 points at halftime, and Luke Faws and Dawson Gentry scored 15 each.  Montgomery County had made 9 threes in the first half.

The Indians were up 72-18 after three. Just before the end of the quarter, Cayden Reed was fouled hard by Jayden Boyers, which resulted in a double technical.  

Midway through the fourth, Jashon Lewis was called for an offensive foul for a push off on Ethan Dunn and called for a technical foul right after.  Dunn made both free throws to put MoCo up 81-20.  Reserves for both teams played from that point on.

Tyce Jarvis led Montgomery County with 25 points.  Luke Fawns had 17 and Dawson Gentry had 15 points.  Landon Kinney led Harrison County with 10.  The Indians shot 31 of 51 from the floor, 11 of 23 from three, and 14 of 17 from the foul line.  They had 14 steals and forced 23 turnovers.  They out-rebounded Harrison 25-9 with 13 offensive rebounds.

The Royals pulled away late in the second quarter and led the entire second half to beat the Mustangs in the 10th Region Tournament quarterfinals. 

After one quarter, Mason led Brossart 17-16. Braeden Mryrick, Garryon McClain, and Teegin Routt each made threes in the first quarter for the Royals. 

Carson Hesse, who came into the game averaging 4.9 ppg, scored 8 points in the first quarter for the Mustangs. However, he did not score in the second quarter. 

Both teams traded blows in the second quarter with three ties and six lead changes.  

Myrick’s four-point play on a fouled three gave Mason County the 27-25 lead with 1:30 left until halftime.  The Royals would keep that lead for the remainder of the game.

At halftime Mason County led Bishop Brossart 30-25.  The Royals shot 6 of 13 from three.  Braeden Myrick was 3 of 4 from beyond the arc and had 13 points at the half.

Myrick would give Mason their largest lead of the night, 41-29, when he made another three with 2:43 in the third quarter.  

Brossart would cut the lead to three early in the fourth, but Cole Horch’s 11 points in the quarter would keep the lead in the hands of the Royals. 

Braeden Myrick and Garryon McClain led Mason County with 21 points each.  Myrick was 5 of 7 from three and McClain was 3 of 7.  Cole Horch added 16 points and 7 rebounds.  Brossart had 17 points off the bench while Mason had none.  The Royals shot 25 of 45 from the floor for 53.3%.

Mason County improves to 17-13 and Bishop Brossart’s season ends at 15-16.

Mason County will face Montgomery County in the semifinals on Monday at 6:00 p.m.
