Girls Basketball Review & Rankings: Week 8

Bishop Brossart remains firmly in the
chase for a small-school state title. Snow, ice and below-zero temperatures threaten
to reshape this week’s basketball schedule

10thRegion.com’s football, volleyball, and girls basketball coverage is sponsored by K’s IGA Augusta.

Winter Storm Fern swept into Kentucky over the weekend, forcing several 10th Region teams to scrap their Saturday games. And if Fern, when finished, delivers even half the punch forecasters warned about, the storm could continue to influence schedules as the new week unfolds, especially with another round of snow expected to move in later in the week.

Bishop Brossart, meanwhile, has been busy representing the 10th Region at the 2026 Kentucky Statewide All “A” Classic state basketball tournament for small schools in Owensboro. The Lady Stangs opened the tournament with back-to-back wins to reach the semifinal round, but Fern’s arrival forced the All “A” committee to reshuffle the schedule. As a result, the final two rounds have been pushed to Sunday, February 1, with all games still set for the Owensboro Sportscenter.

Coach Aaron Stamm’s squad (20-1) will square off with Region 3 powerhouse Owensboro Catholic (15-5) at 8 a.m. CST on Sunday morning.

Below is a look at my updated 10th Region rankings. With most teams holding serve last week, there was very little movement across the board, and nearly everyone stays right where they were. All player statistics are based on information submitted to the KHSAA website.

1) GEORGE ROGERS CLARK (14-2) – Coach Robbie Graham’s top-ranked Lady Cardinals did nothing to jeopardize their hold on the No. 1 spot after cruising to a pair of comfortable wins last week. The first came in Pickerington, Ohio, where they handled Kings Christian Collegiate (Oakville, ON) 54-33. Senior Teigh Yeast led the way with 15 points and 7 rebounds and earned game MVP honors. Junior guard Kennedy Stamper, who recently eclipsed the 1,500-point milestone for her career, matched Yeast with 15. Eighth grader Eliyah Strode controlled the glass with 13 rebounds to go along with her 6 points.

Their second win came against district rival Paris, where GRC exploded to a 35-9 first-quarter lead and never looked back, rolling to an 83-26 victory after knocking down seven threes in the first half. Stamper and Yeast again paced the Cards with 15 apiece, Strode added 10, and senior Logan Kennedy chipped in 9.

GRC heads to Russ Day Gym on Tuesday for a 40th District matchup with Bourbon County. On Friday, they’ll compete in the prestigious Shirley’s Way Girls’ Louisville Invitational Tournament, where they will face the Moore-Mercy-Manual winner.

Yeast continues to lead the Lady Cards in scoring at 12.5 points per game, followed by Stamper at 11.5 and sophomore Kyliegh Chestnut at 10.9.

2) CAMPBELL COUNTY (13-3) – The Lady Camels saw their 11-game win streak snapped last week, falling 44-42 to a very good Russell squad out of Region 16 at the Kitten Classic in Ashland. Senior leader Isabella Jayasuriya delivered a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and despite the setback, Coach Davey Johnson’s team remains firmly planted at No. 2 in my region rankings.

Campbell opened the week with a 67-37 win over Franklin County, led by junior Amerie Mullins (14 points, 8 rebounds) and Jayasuriya (12 points). At the Kitten Classic, the Lady Camels then edged host Ashland 60-57, the same Ashland team that beat Russell by 20. Jayasuriya once again came up big with 18 points and 12 boards, while senior Faith Whitford added 14.

This week, Campbell County hosts No. 4 Montgomery County on Thursday before traveling to Conner on Friday. They’ll wrap up the week on Sunday with an afternoon matchup against Fort Thomas Highlands at NKU.

Jayasuriya continues to anchor the Lady Camels, averaging 16 points and 10 rebounds per game.

3) BISHOP BROSSART (20-1) – The Lady Stangs opened last week with a blowout win over No. 8 Mason County at Bracken County’s MLK Classic. Sophomore Kylie Smith powered the effort with 23 points and 5 rebounds, knocking down 5 of 6 attempts from beyond the arc. Juniors Hadley Eviston (13 points) and Greylee Kramer (12 points) also reached double figures.

Brossart’s other two victories came at the small-school state tournament, where they knocked off Green County and defending champion Danville Christian. Against Green, Smith led with 18 points and 6 rebounds, while junior Lilee Meyers chipped in 11. In the win over DCA, the Lady Stangs’ “big three” delivered again: Smith scored 21 with six made threes, Kramer added 20, and Eviston finished with 15 points and 7 rebounds.

Still a firm No. 3 in my rankings, Brossart is slated to visit Scott on Friday for a key 37th District matchup. They’re also scheduled to travel to Newport Central Catholic on Saturday, though that contest will likely be canceled or moved due to the All “A” schedule adjustments.

Smith continues to pace the Lady Stangs at 18.7 points per game, while Kramer is contributing 12.3 per outing.

4) MONTGOMERY COUNTY (12-6) – Coach Jordan Perry’s Lady Indians put together a perfect 3–0 week with wins over Paris, Scott, and Menifee County. In the comfortable district victory over Paris, freshman Raegan Mays caught fire from deep, knocking down six threes on her way to 21 points. Junior Baylee Warner added 12. Against No. 7 Scott, junior Elaine Purvis set the tone with 17 points, while senior Addison Terry delivered a strong double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds, and Warner chipped in 11.

Weather permitting, the Lady Indians are slated to host No. 6 Pendleton County on Monday. Bracken County is scheduled to visit Mt. Sterling Tuesday evening, again dependent on travel conditions. On Thursday, MoCo heads north for a top-five showdown with No. 2 Campbell County. They’ll close the week on the road at Jackson City, where they’ll meet Letcher County Central in the Jet 2 Sports Classic.

Terry continues to lead Montgomery County at 17.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Purvis (13.3), Warner (12.2), and Mays (10.2) also remain in double figures.

5) NICHOLAS COUNTY (12-7) – Coach Reesa Martin’s Lady Jackets bounced back nicely last week after falling to Bishop Brossart in the All “A” Classic 10th Region championship. Nicholas County rallied from a late deficit to knock off Lafayette in Lexington, 58-53. Junior sensation Maggie Simons was spectacular, pouring in 34 points and grabbing 13 rebounds while hitting five threes and going 11-for-13 at the line. The Lady Jackets closed the week by improving to 3-0 in district play, rolling past Robertson County 76–13.

This week, Martin’s squad heads to Cynthiana on Tuesday for a 38th District matchup with Harrison County. On Friday, Pendleton County visits Carlisle for a rescheduled district contest. The Lady Jackets will wrap up the week on Saturday when they host 11th Region foe Madison Central.

Simons, the state’s 7th-leading scorer, is averaging 26 points and 7 rebounds per game. Seventh grader Zoe Brown, connecting on nearly 54% of her three-point attempts, one of the best marks in the state (if not the best), is adding just under 12 points per outing.

6) PENDLETON COUNTY (11-4) – Coach Patrick Kelsch’s Lady Cats played twice last week, opening with a 53-49 loss to Newport Central Catholic before bouncing back with a big district win over Harrison County. Senior Lily Ashcraft and junior Hannah Spaulding paced Pendleton against NCC with 18 and 12 points, respectively. In the victory over the Fillies, junior Selena Rarrieck poured in 17, Spaulding added 16 points and 7 rebounds, and senior Laci Tackett rounded out the scoring leaders with 12.

Pendleton County faces a demanding stretch this week. Weather permitting, the Lady Cats make the trip over to Mt. Sterling Monday to take on the fourth-ranked Montgomery County Lady Indians. On Tuesday, they return home to host 38th District foe Robertson County, then head to Carlisle on Friday for a key district matchup with No. 5 Nicholas County. Their week wraps up Saturday when Region 9’s Conner visits Falmouth.

Spaulding continues to lead the team statistically, averaging 14.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. Ashcraft follows with 16.3 points and 5.7 boards per outing. Rarrieck (10.4 ppg) and Tackett (10.8 ppg) round out the Lady Cats’ double-figure scorers.

7) SCOTT (7-12) – Coach Eric Pouncey’s Lady Eagles split their two games last week, opening with an impressive 54-51 win over a strong Beechwood squad before falling the next night to visiting Montgomery County, a result that ultimately kept Scott from climbing in my rankings. In the victory over Beechwood, sophomore leader Noelle Price poured in 27 points and grabbed 5 rebounds, while freshman Molly Porada added 12. The duo led the way again against MoCo, with Price scoring 21 and Porada contributing another 14.

Scott’s already rugged schedule doesn’t ease up this week. The Lady Eagles host two teams currently in the hunt for the All “A” Classic state title, Covington Holy Cross on Tuesday and Bishop Brossart on Friday in a key district matchup.

Price continues to spearhead the Lady Eagles offense at 17.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. Sophomore Sydney Richmond follows with 12.7 points and 4.6 boards per outing.

8) MASON COUNTY (10-6) – Coach Jay Fite’s Lady Royals went 1-1 last week, falling big to No. 3 Bishop Brossart at Bracken County’s MLK Classic, before bouncing back with a nice district win over host Bracken County on their return trip back to the Igloo. Senior Amirah Reed led Mason with 17 in the loss to Brossart. No stats were reported for the Bracken County game.

The Lady Royals will stay in district play this week when they make the short drive across town to face Maysville St. Patrick Tuesday night and then remain on the road on Friday when they make the drive up the AA Highway to take on Augusta.

The Lady Royals continue to be led by Reed, who averages 16.9 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. Junior Kyleigh Kirk is contributing 10.7 points per game.

9) HARRISON COUNTY (9-11) – Coach Bill Watson’s Fillies dropped both of their games last week, beginning with a setback to Region 12’s Madison Southern at Bracken County’s MLK Classic before falling to Pendleton County in district play. In the loss to Southern, sophomore Kaylee Banks led the Fillies with 9 points and 3 rebounds. Against Pendleton, senior Keylee Custard topped the scoring with 11 points, while senior Resa Heimlich added 7 points and 8 rebounds.

Harrison County remains in district action this week, hosting No. 5 Nicholas County on Tuesday before welcoming Robertson County to Cynthiana on Friday.

Custard remains the Fillies’ top producer, averaging 15.2 points and 5 rebounds per game.

10) BRACKEN COUNTY (9-7) – Coach Jonathon Nelson’s Lady Bears picked up two wins in three outings last week, opening with a 54-40 victory over Greenup County in their MLK Classic. Sophomore Kailey Sharp powered the win with a dominant 28-point, 7-rebound performance, while senior Ella Burton added 10. Bracken then dropped a tough 55-50 district matchup to Mason County, though Sharp again led the way with 18 points and 6 boards. Sophomore Sophia Bachman contributed 12 points and 7 rebounds, and fellow sophomore Kyndall Johnson added 11 points and 7 rebounds. The Lady Bears closed the week strong with a 50-34 district win over Augusta, highlighted by Sharp’s 18 points and 8 rebounds and Johnson’s 12 points and 7 boards.

This week, Bracken County hits the road Tuesday night to face No. 4 Montgomery County. On Wednesday, Boone County visits the Igloo, and the Lady Bears wrap up the week Friday inside Russ Day Gym against the Bourbon County Lady Colonels.

Sharp continues to pace the Lady Bears statistically, averaging 17.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Johnson follows with 11.7 points and 5.6 rebounds per outing.

11) PARIS (12-8) – Coach Aaron Speaks’ Ladyhounds ran into a brutal stretch last week, drawing district foes No. 4 Montgomery County and top-ranked George Rogers Clark in back-to-back games inside Earl Redwine Gym. Paris dropped both contests decisively, marking their fourth loss in their last six outings after previously ripping off a seven-game win streak. Still, they remain locked into this spot… they earned it with their body of work.

Eighth grader Rose Hayden led Paris against Montgomery County with 13 points and 9 rebounds, while senior Jamyah Bell added 11. Junior Molly Mason pulled down 12 rebounds to go with her 9 points. Against GRC, Bell paced the Ladyhounds with 10 points, and Mason contributed 7 points and 10 boards.

Paris now shifts its focus to this week’s slate, beginning with a scheduled road trip to Danville tomorrow night, though the weather may have the final say on whether that game tips off. The Ladyhounds won’t return to action again until Saturday, when they head back toward Danville, a little farther this time, to take on Somerset, a team they edged by one point back in December.

Mason continues to lead the Ladyhounds, averaging 14 points and 10 rebounds per game.

12) BOURBON COUNTY (5-15) – Coach Kylie Hilander’s young Lady Colonels picked up one win in three tries last week, opening with a convincing 71-39 victory over host Wolfe County. Four players reached double figures for BoCo, with eighth grader Madison Akemon leading the way with 12 points. Freshman Maddy Bezeau and eighth grader Kendal Hardin added 11 apiece, while seventh grader Leah Hinkson chipped in 10. Bourbon then fell at East Jessamine after slipping behind 21-2 early and spending the rest of the night trying to claw back. Seniors Regan Ring (12 points) and Makenzie Jolly (10 points, 6 rebounds) paced the effort. The Lady Colonels closed the week with a loss at Beechwood, where Ring finished with 10 points and 7 boards.

The Lady Colonels host top-ranked George Rogers Clark Tuesday night, then have a chance to climb in the rankings if they can knock off Bracken County inside Russ Day Gym on Friday. They’ll wrap up the week on Saturday with a road trip to Owsley County.

Sophomore Paisley Hutchison continues to lead the Lady Colonels in scoring, with Ring holding down the paint. And a tip of the cap to Hardin, who recorded the 100th assist of her young career.

13) AUGUSTA (5-9) – Coach Dana Bach’s Lady Panthers split their two outings last week, earning a win over Robertson County before falling in district play to Bracken County. In the victory over Robertson, freshman Kahghan Hinson powered the Panthers with 20 points and 8 rebounds, while fellow freshman Aryanna Davis dominated the glass with 12 points and 17 boards. In the loss to Bracken County, Hinson again led the way, finishing with 15.

Augusta now prepares for a demanding stretch, playing four games in five days. The Lady Panthers travel to Lewis County Tuesday night, then return home for matchups with Williamstown on Thursday and Mason County on Friday. The grueling run concludes Saturday with a road trip to Ludlow.

Hinson continues to pace Augusta, averaging 12.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.

14) ROBERTSON COUNTY (3-13) – Coach Brian Dufresne’s Lady Devils dropped both of their games last week, falling to Augusta and Nicholas County. In the loss to Augusta, junior Peyton Jolly finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while eighth grader Mackenzie Rose-Collins matched her with 10 points.

This week, the Lady Devils face two district matchups, hitting the road to Pendleton County Tueaday night before returning home Friday to host Harrison County.

Jolly continues to lead Robertson County, averaging 14.9 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.

15) ST. PATRICK (1-13) – Coach Isaac Klee’s Lady Saints played just once last week, falling 72-37 to visiting Villa Madonna. As she has all season, senior Lillian Klee shouldered the load, finishing with 31 points and 12 rebounds, her latest in a long line of standout performances. Klee enters the week as the state’s leading scorer, averaging just under 30 points per game, while her 15 rebounds per outing rank fourth statewide, underscoring just how dominant she has been on both ends for a young St. Patrick squad still searching for consistency around her.

The Lady Saints return home Tuesday for a district matchup with Mason County before heading to Williamstown on Saturday, hoping to build some momentum as they move deeper into the second half of the season.

Greetings everyone, my name is Ivan K. Rice, better known as The Doctor of Sports or Sports Doctor. I’m the son of the late Robert W. Rice and Seleste Rice and I have two brothers (Dwayne and Terry) and a sister (Yvette). I was born in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky but call Paris, Kentucky my home. I was given my nickname (Doctor of Sports) when I attended Paris’ Southside Middle School back in 1976 when a classmate started calling me by that name because of all of the sports history I would talk about on a daily basis. From that day forward that name stuck with me, where most call me The Doctor or just Sports and never Ivan. I attended Paris High School and Eastern Kentucky University and while at Paris, I played football, basketball, baseball and ran track. I was also the Sports Editor of the Paris High Pride Newspaper, which started my journalism journey under Mary Dickerson. I went on to work on the Eastern Progress Newspaper and was a member of the EKU Athletic Department’s stats crew. I’ve been with the Bourbon County Citizen newspaper since 1984, where I started out just covering the sports teams at Paris High School before branching out and covering all local schools in 1990. Because of that, today, I hold the position of Sports Editor. I’ve been voted into several Hall of Fames because of my sports writing/coverage, and I’ve won numerous Kentucky Press Association Awards, as well as the recipient of the Inaugural Bob White/Mike Fields Media Service Award that was named after these two sports writing giants. While not covering sports, I work for Geno’s Formal Affair and Lexington Parks and Recreation. During my spare time (the little that I have), I coach youth football, continue to play softball, flag football, golf, basketball, and tennis, while always participating in the Bluegrass State Games despite my age. On top of that, I’m the voice of the Paris Ladyhounds basketball team. I’m a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Paris and a few of the best things I love doing are karaoke (my favorite song – Rapper’s Delight), playing pickleball and cornhole and watching sports. My favorite sports teams are Louisville, UCLA, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Browns, and the Los Angeles Lakers, as well as Paris and Bourbon County. My job at the Bourbon County Citizen has taken me to many places and I’ve seen a lot of games over my years, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. It’s been an awesome ride. Thanks for your continuous support and I hope you guys enjoy what you read, from the Sports Doctor, each week. And to my athletes that I have the privilege of covering, “Always play to win but if you lose, deal with it, move on, and be ready to play the next game!” --the Sports Doctor
