Campbell falls to McCracken in Second Round of State Baseball Tournament

LEXINGTON, KY — The Camels’ season came to an end on Saturday night with a 4-3 loss to McCracken County.

Campbell County got on the board early in the game. Greg Vineyard, an Indiana Wesleyan University commit, started the 1st inning with a single up the middle. Evan Clark followed with a single of his own and a bunt hit by Jake Gross.

With the bases loaded in the top of the first and no outs, Zack Riley hit a sacrifice fly scoring Vineyard to put the Camels up 1-0. McCracken Count escaped the jam after a double play.

Jacob Napier started off on the mound for Campbell County, striking out the side on 11 pitches to end the first inning. Napier came into Saturday’s game with a 3.17 ERA in 57.1 innings (the most for the Camels).

Campbell County struck again in the top of the 3rd. Vineyard walked and Clark singled, leading to Riley being intentionally walked to load the bases. A passed ball allowed Vineyard to score putting them up 2-0.

In the bottom of the 3rd the Mustangs started off with a lead-off triple from Moffatt. Riley singled to score him, cutting the McCracken County deficit to 2-1.

In the 4th, Campbell County led off with a single from the catcher Parker Schweitzer. Pinch runner Carson Clark advanced on a throwing error. Caeleb James drove in Clark with a double to left field, putting the Camels up 3-1.

McCracken County answered after two walks and an error, loading the bases for the Mustangs. A single and hit batsmen tied things up at 3-3.

In the bottom of the 5th, Napier walked the lead-off batter, ending his day on the mound after 90 pitches, 9 K’s, 4 hits, 3 walks, and 4 runs (2 earned).

Franzen (0.53 ERA) came in for Napier allowing one run on a throwing error after a Mustang single and fielders choice.

McCracken County would hold onto the 4-3 lead and end the Camels’ season at 24-10. The Mustangs out of Region 1 move to 34-6.

McCracken County will face St. Xaiver of Lousiville this Friday at 6:30pm. Russell County will face Woodford County at 12:30pm. The championship game between these four teams will be Saturday at 7:00pm at Kentucky Proud Park.
